Jessica Jones, CPA
Comprehensive accounting experience
As a CPA I have held roles in public accounting, audit, tax preparation, small business and nonprofit accounting, while working with diverse industries spanning from marketing and architecture to energy and education. From building out that first Quickbooks file to ringing the bell on the podium at NYSE, I have seen the full spectrum of accounting.
A unique perspective
Built through years of research and experimentation, I bring insights gathered from the fields of art, nonprofit management, disaster response, mindfulness, education and more. I never stop learning and trying to rethink why and how we build.
A passion for impact
Good accounting is about setting up an organization to be as successful as possible, but I launched this firm so that I could choose clients based on the value they bring to their community, and not just their potential for profit.
Frequently asked questions

Unlike a CFO or CAO, who are primarily focused on high-level planning or investor relations, a Controller oversees the hands-on creation and administration of the accounting function. Controllers get things done.

Startup accounting has all the constraints of small business accounting for a new company (limited time and staff, no historical records), paired with the regulatory goals of a large corporation (audits, internal controls, complex equity structures), spiced up with an accelerated timeline and a constantly evolving business model.
Unlike accounting systems for established businesses which are rarely updated, accounting systems for a startup must be built to scale and adapt quickly, while maintaining a balance between appropriate risk and efficient resource allocation.
-
Nope! (Trust me, you don't want to pay a CPA to do your data entry)
However, I can work with you to design an appropriate accounting system and identify the proper resource to maintain your records.
-
Sorry! That's a no, too. Staying 100% up to date on the complex regulatory system that is the Internal Revenue Code is not just a full time job, it is several full time jobs... You will want a specialized tax preparer for personal returns, one for partnerships, and a different one for corporations and complex transaction services.
However, I stay updated on major developments and can help you communicate effectively with your tax preparer and implement their guidance.

If necessary, I have an hourly rate for ad-hoc consulting services. However, I prefer to establish fixed fees for a specific project scope, or base level of support. There is no cost for the initial conversation about what your business needs.
I never want my clients to hesitate to include me in an important conversation because they're afraid of racking up billable hours. Let's identify a goal and a timeline, set an appropriate price, and then focus on taking care of your company.
I also don't expect to work with my clients forever. If we all do our jobs correctly, you will soon be ready to hire a full-time accounting staff (who will be thrilled to find you have a system already in place for them).

I am based in Raleigh, NC and licensed as a CPA with the North Carolina State Board of CPA Examiners. My local business community includes Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.
I love meeting with clients in person, however I also work with clients across the country and am happy to discuss whether a remote arrangement would meet your needs.
